That was great Dave. Thanks for sharing those stories about Scrubs.
Jamie and I got our first cat a week before we got married. A friends mom pulled into her driveway after driving home from the city and he jumped out from underneath her car. We think he was under there somewhere, hanging on for the ride.
My vet estimated that he was about 5 or 6 weeks old. He lived for 8 years before he got congestive heart failure. We tried many things to help him, but he just got worse. Toward what was to become the end, we knew we had to do something to help him obtain peace. On the night that he died he had been laying on my rocker and got up slowly because he had to go to the bathroom, he only made it as far as the bathroom and urinated mostly blood in my closet. I felt horrible that he felt that he even needed to get up to try. I knew that we had to do something asap, but before we even had a chance to think, he had what the vet later described as a heart attack. It happen quick and we wrapped him in a blanket during those final moments and he closed his eyes and went to sleep.
I couldn't be a part of the burial, but Jamie and the boys were. My mom also came over to say goodbye. Everyone loved Max, he was friendly, loyal and often followed us around just like a puppy would. He was amazing and unique.
I watched the burial from my back window, I could not stay outdoors with my family, but I knew Max knew that I loved him.

I know how much you and Alicia loved and cared for your dear Scrubs. He was a lucky cat to have both of you feel this way. It seems to me that people who love and take good care of their pets are very special people and I find that they treat others with respect, too. I have lost two dogs, so I know that feeling. They do become your family. It is a loss and it is very hard to get over. I enjoyed reading your tribute to your dear Scrubs, and I think so much of you for taking the time to write his story. You are indeed a special man, and I can understand why Alicia is so happy. Don't ever lose that caring side of you. It is so outstanding and unique. Love, Aunt JEAN

Heh, I notice that you say you "wouldn't want to presume that without knowing all the facts" right after you said "probably shoplifting". This, of course, is presuming it without knowing all the facts. :)

For the sales guy, I'd point out that the advantage to him not having a legitimate job is that 100% of the profits go to him, no taxes, no percentage to anybody else. Also, he only needs to do it when he feels like it.

LOL! I'd forgotten the Brady Bunch Briefcase trick. Even at the time I thought it was funny though. 'Cause they were trying to prove the person didn't have whiplash. If they *did* have it and reacted to that deliberate briefcase ploy, good ol' Mr. Brady would've been a prison bitch before you can say "Alice, I don't have 5 minutes to wait for my rice!!!".

BTW, I'm collecting for my high school "Hooked on Phonics" team. I only look old because of this age disability. My school is St. Mary's school for girls, Principle is Agnes Bojaxhiu and the money will be used to re-laminate the 1970's phonics cards. Please give generously (the equivalent of $10.99 plus tax and tip should do).

My sister,brother-in-law and a couple of friends they were with were taken in once by a scammer who said she had her wallet stolen and that all she needed was bus fare to get back home. About $50 worth. So they got together and came up with the money for her and sent her on her way.
About a month or so later, in the same mall, the same girl came up to them with the same story. They're a wee bit more cynical now than they used to be...

I suppose I'd call that tactic "The Stranded Traveler".

Your point about the UN is well taken, however the Israeli Defense Ministry Official is quoted as saying they can conduct this mission without U.S. "coordination" and "consultation." Both these terms imply Israeli sovereignty and control regardless of the permission granted by the U.S.

I also agree with your assessment of how civilized nations now exercise excessive restraint not seen before in history. In historical terms, the idea of "might makes right" seemed to end at the dawn of the nuclear age. Perhaps there is some credence to the idea of "mutually assured destruction" (MAD).

I still think that this (http://marc-bourassa.com/2008/06/03/mandatory-sunset-for-everything-not-in-the-constitution ) is part of the answer.

The other big issue is how to "re-educate". Who would do it? Why should we trust them or their motives? What would the philosophies be?

Our founding fathers had the luxury of a near tabula rasa, free from the centuries of history that bog down and distort every other nation on the planet and prevent them from rising above themselves. They fashioned a secular constitution to serve as the basis for a system of governance that kept out theocratic meddling and provided checks and balances to ensure that the naturally corrupting influences of executive, legislative and judicial power could be kept in check.

Without some tremendous natural disaster, we have no more new lands to migrate to and to try this constitutional experiment again until we begin to travel to the other planets within our solar system.

So we're stuck with what we are now building or we move to destroy it by revolution.

But a revolution would introduce so many of the elements that we managed to avoid the first time around, I'm not sure that we could hope for any improvement over what we have now.

I'll have to ask my barber what he thinks... ;)

I'm so glad they film this stuff for my entertainment.

You think this will help others to avoid those mistakes or that others will just say "That won't happen to ME."?

I also appreciate the fact that they are talking about "permission" from the US. The UN is still pretty toothless without the US and this article makes no bones about that fact. I just wanted to go an a minor tangent and point out that never before in history have we had a nation (empire, what have you) this powerful that exercised such incredible restraint on the world stage.

Also, it would not bother me at all if Israel followed through on their plans. I think any theocracy necessarily needs to be limited in technology to the rationality that they exhibit. Islam, and any of the other fundamental sky-god sects should have access to nothing more potent than a scimitar with which to terrorize the rest of the planet.

Are my colors showing yet? :)
